1. Introduction
to technology
Technology is based on scientific knowledge, used to create
products and goods that solve problems within society. For instance, the
technological advancements made to date have enabled us to travel
great distances and even go into outer space. We live in large cities,
which provide all different kinds of services and are now able to
build extensive infrastructure, in order to reach the most remote
settlements on Earth. We have even been able to develop communication
systems that bring us all closer together. However, the biggest
hallenge technology is faced with is improving the quality of life of the
world’s population, bridging the gap between developed countries and
countries in which the population can barely survive.

2. Drawing.
In this unit you will study the various ways that everyday
objects can be analaysed in order to obtain Human beings have an innate
need to communicate with one another. Well before written languages appeared,
we drew pictures, since drawing meets the human need to express ourselves and
convey our ideas and feelings.
There are two different types of drawing. Artisticdrawing is
free, has no restrictions and plays with textures, colours and a wide range of
artistic techniques. Technical drawing, on the other hand, was developed as a
universal language capable of communicating ideas that enabled technicians and
scientists to convey their knowledge, in order to build objects.
In practice, the distinction between the two types of drawing is
not quite so clear. Artists must master technical drawing techniques, since
they use them in many of their works. Furthermore, engineers, architects and
scientists may also apply artistic techniques to the final presentation of
their work, in order to make it more expressive.

3. Technical Materials.
Researchers in the petrochemical industry are responsible
for creating new compounds that meet our needs, whilst providing
materials with new uses and properties.
Plastic has become and continues to be the
most widely used artificial material of the 20th century. There is an
enormous variety of plastics around us: planes, trains, cars, houses,
furniture and countless other objects contain plastic.
However, the environmental impact caused by the
uncontrolled disposal of synthetic materials, especially plastics, brings
about the pollution of rivers, mountains, valleys and oceans for
hundreds of years. Therefore, our highly consumerist society must use
and dispose of these materials responsibly.
Construction Materials: After exploiting the areas
nature made available to human beings for refuge and shelter, they began
to modify them and build new homes ever since tools were invented and they
developed the ability to transform them. In addition to other
materials you have studied in previous years, which are widely used in
construction, for example wood and metals, we will now study petrous or
stone materials, which originate from rocks.
Introduction.

4. Mechanisms.
Forces and energy surround us and we are continuosly affected by
them. Humans first started to develop technology with the use of primitive
tools and implements, which enabled them to perform task more easily than when
they just used their hands. Over time, humans have created mechanisms and
machines to control their environment and, as result, use it for their own
benefit.
There are many different kinds of mechanisms: some convert
motion, others transmit it and some change speed. The purpose of mechaisms is
to help us create objects that makes our lives easier.

5. Energy and its transformation.
Electrical energy is the most common form of energy used in
industry and in homes. This is because is easy to obtein and transform into
heat, light, movement, etc. It is also easy to distribute and control.
However, electricity, presents one mayor
disadvantage: it is difficult to store and can be only store in small
amounts. Excess electricity produced is not consumed and as a result,
overloads the electrical grid.

6. Electricity.
2500years ago, Thales watched amazed as a mysterious force
appeared when he rubbed a piece of amber on the skin of an animal or cotton
cloth. This force attracted smaller pieces of lightweight material like dust or
papyrus. He could not imagine then that he was witnessing one of the most powerful
forces of nature, electrical energy.
Between then and now, humankind has been able to master
electricity and place it at our disposal in virtually every activity. We have
been constantly adding electrical devices to our lives and nowadays we can not
imagine living without electricity. Would you accept the challenge of trying to
spend 24 hours without using electricity? Try it and take note of the moments
in which you could not avoid using it. By the end of the day, you will surely
have a long list.

7. Electronics.
Electronics is one of the most prolific branches of science,
which developed as result of efforts made across various disciplines. Research
carried out over the past two centuries has enabled us to dominate electricity,
whilst increasing our knowledge of different materials, atoms and the behaviour
of the particles from which they are composed, has given rise to many different
electronic devices.
It is impossible to imagine life at its current pace without
electronic systems. Indeed, it is thanks to electronic developments that we can
use our mobile phones, IT systems, control systems, aeronautic devices and an
endless range of products that play an important role in our daily lives.
In this unit you will learn about semiconductors and electronic devices,
such as diodes and transistors, and also about those circuits in which these
elements are used to control the flow of electrons.
